Lemonade (The good stuff!)---Scroll down to learn what pioneer lemonade REALLY was like...
Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer day, than an ice cold glass of lemonade. For pioneers, lemonade was a treat! They didn't have the luxury of powder mixes, bottled lemonade, or cans of frozen concentrate. Produce was not transported like it is today. If you did not live in a place that lemons grew, you might not have ever tasted one. That said, perhaps on a very special occasion, lemons would be squeezed, sweetened, and savored; and a pioneer in our area would get to enjoy a real treat!
Ingredients:
1 1/2 lemon juice (juice from approximately 6 lemons)
2 cups of sugar
4-5 cups of water (depending on how sweet your prefer your lemonade to be)
ice
Cut the lemons in half. Use a lemon squeezer or your hand to squeeze the juice from the lemons. Be sure to take the seeds out of the juice. In a large pitcher, add the lemon juice and sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add water to the lemonade, adjusting the amount according to your taste. Add ice and enjoy!
Pioneer Lemonade (no lemons required!)
Pioneers were aware of scurvy and the ill effects of not having enough vitamin C in their diet. They would often make a special version of lemonade that didn't have lemons in it at all. Pioneer lemonade is not something that people typically make to enjoy, but it is a fun activity for children to make and taste!
Ingredients:
2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar
1 1/2 cups water
2 tbsp sugar
Mix the ingredients in a large drinking glass and enjoy.
